I hate ice storms more than any other weather, with the possible exception of tornadoes.  I had to play about 30 miles away last night and it was fine when I got there.  The weather forecast said rain and snow till 1:00 AM when it was supposed to change to snow.  But nooooo.  Sometime during the show, the freezing rain started.  When we got done, we started tearing down right away and it still took until almost 2:30.  My car was coated in ice and I was darn lucky to get into it.  I stupidly left my deicer and ice scraper at home, so I let the car run for about 15 minutes to clear the windshield, and used a jack handle to break some off the driver's window.  The other side wasn't too bad.

About half the 30 mile drive was on a 2 lane highway and the last half was 4 lane.  I'd hoped that the 4 lane would be better but it wasn't.  I drove all the way home at 30 miles an hour.  They call it "white-knuckling" and I was a worn out wreck by the time I got home an hour later.

This morning there are tree limbs down everywhere and electricity is out in scattered places in town.  One street had 2 trees down across it.  You can hear tree limbs snapping all over town.

Tonight, I'm supposed to play down on the Lake Of The Ozarks, about an hour and a half away.  I'm really hoping like hell they cancel it but so far, no word on that.  At least if we do, I won't have to drive.  Hoping I don't lose electricity or internet in the meantime.  John

It turns out I did have to play New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.  While even today, the trees are hanging low with ice, the roads weren't too bad.  We had to leave so early yesterday though, that I didn't even have time for a cup of coffee before I left.  Sadly, hardly anybody came out but the guy was happy with us and we got paid way better than I expected, and we're even booked back in February.  It was a very profitable couple of days, even if it did wear me out.  John

Glad you had something set up to play! About how many people were there New Years Eve?

I went to bed early that night, but was woken by very high winds about 2am and Nova yowling for Orion.

Anyway, Happy New Year!

I saw Nova and Andromeda on the couch together this morning.  I see them there more often lately.

I was shocked that we got booked for New Year's Day.  It was just booked a week or so ahead.  I have worked Christmas day before, but I've never worked New Year's Day.  People are usually tired out from New Year's Eve and don't go out New Year's Day.  (And they didn't.)  Nice big place with almost no one there.  New Year's Eve though, another nice big place, we probably had around 100 people.  The majority of people left right after midnight because the freezing rain was already starting.  It was 2:20 AM when I finally got on the road and about 3:30 when I got home.

I first played for money in October 1971, so it's been 49 years now, and in that 49 years, I've missed maybe 3 or 4 years of playing on New Year's Eve.  I sometimes think it might be nice just to stay home but if I did, something would feel really wrong about it.

Cheri's Dad is feeling pretty rough and everybody is expecting to lose him pretty soon.  Cheri got a call last night saying her Mom didn't expect him to make it through the night.  I left it up to her as to whether she wanted me to come along or whether she'd rather I didn't.  They just live maybe 8 or 10 blocks away.  She just told me to wait home.  Yesterday was the second anniversary of my Mom's death and I couldn't imagine him going on the same date.  She just left to go see him this morning.  I hate to see him go.  I got very lucky in the in-laws department.  I've known them both for 10 years now and both have been really nice to me.  I was very lucky with her brother and sister too.  All very nice people.  John

I am glad you saw Andie and Nova together! SOmetime this year it is very likely they will be gone. :(

Please give Cheri my best and that I'll say a prayer for her father. May I ask how old he is?

I got to bed a little before 4:00 AM and the phone went off at about 5:00.  It was Cheri's Mom, saying she thought he was gone.  Cheri jumped up and went right over.  I got up and stayed by my phone in case I was needed.  I heard nothing till she came back about 9:30.  He had died in his sleep, which of course, is the absolute, best possible way you can go.  I'm not precisely sure how old he was but he was in his early or mid 80s.  He died 2 years and 2 days after my Mom.

Cheri is at least for now, taking it pretty well.  I suppose because we had seen it coming for a while, and he was none too happy the last few weeks.  Always very active, he hated being so badly incapacitated and really was ready to go.  I asked how her Mom was doing but I really don't know.  Cheri was only here for 10 or 20 minutes then went back to her Mom's.  I have no idea what to say or do, not that there's anything you really can say or do.  Cheri probably got 6 or 7 hours of sleep, where I only got an hour, and I expect it will slam me pretty shortly.

I did see one of the cats on the couch this morning.  I know all too well what it's like losing them.  I know you, Peg and Tim know it too.  Cheri is not that close to the cat but she is very close to Piggy and I'm counting on him to help her through all this.  The first thing she worried about when she got home, was whether Piggy had any food.  I would never have guessed how much she would love that little guy and he really is a great source of entertainment for all of us, with the possible exception of the cat.  I really don't know how she feels about it.  John
