Hppy birthday to Milo and Panda!

We took the grandkids to the State Fair yesterday.  That involves a lot of walking...and walking...and walking.  The kids rode a few of the rides.  (A couple of which I'd never have got on.)  We watched a couple of bands, (not for very long).  Watched the BMX bicycle kids doing backflips on steel ramps.  Went through the children's zoo.  (watched chickens hatching, donkeys, llamas, hogs, goats, and even cats.)  They have a big kids area with some really elaborate places for kids to play, a small cabin, a general store, giant checkers, a fishing bridge with magnetic fish, rocks to paint, and the kids did it all.  The food was insane.  $8 hamburgers, $8 32 ounce drinks, small cups of chocolate milk went up from 25 cents last year to $1.25.  Ever on the lookout though, I mnaged to find hamburgers at $2.50 and drinks at $4.  Cheri had a corn dog, which after one bad experience I won't touch.  We were there I think about 5 hours.  When we left the car said it was an even 100 degrees.  I was really glad the whole thing was only about 10 minutes from the house.

A couple of people stopped me and asked if I was playing in the "Bud Tent" this year.  That's really nice and really surprising that anybody would remember me doing that from last year!  I thanked them and explained that I took this summer off.

Cheri got tickets to the ZZ Top concert next week so we'll be going back.  That will be the first concert I will have seen in I'm not sure how many years.  Last year when we played the Fair, we were across the street from the Beach Boys, so I could hear them on break but couldn't see them.  I've heard but not seen a lot of bands that way over the years.  A few years ago we played across from "3 Doors Down" and when they got done they came over to see us, and their drummer sat in with us.  A few of the bands over the years have come over to see us.  I was honestly glad I didn't have to go through that this year but of course, it made me wonder if I should have.  John

That is so cool! And you will see XX Top? Wow! The state fair had Cheap Trick and Beach Boys out here (I found out after the fair ended). 3 Doors Down played like 12 years ago here. I went to that. It was cool people stopped you and asked about you playing!

Next year I plan to go to the state fair and the fair at the rodeo too.

When I play the Fair, I have to be there all day long, as we do 2 shows, afternoon and evening.  We're always there across the street when the big acts get through so we get their crowds when they exit.  You're always beat when you're done.  After setting up, it's stiflingly hot and muggy, and it's always dusty from the various race tracks and animal shows, and it makes for such a long day.  They you have to tear down.  A few years back we stopped about a half hour early because a storm was coming and of course, you're set up in a big tent.  We got about 3 quarters loaded up when the heavy wind and rain hit.  We had to pull aluminum awnings out of the road before we could leave.  The storm had blown them over from nearby.  We were soaked.  I just didn't want to go through all that again this year.

I'm always amazed when people remember me.  I look a little unusual which helps but it's the unusual stuff I do that they remember.  The talk-box, the fiddle bow, over the head, the Van Halen tap-on stuff, is all unusual.  The talk-box is what everybody remembers most, and people always remember Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel".  It's people remembering me that makes me think about going back to work.  I'm not that good, I'm just that unusual.

Cheri has always been a ZZ Top fanatic.  She was ecstatic when she heard they'd be here so she got tickets right away.  I think it's for tomorrow night.  It's outdoors at the Fair so of course, if it rains she's going to come unglued.  We did have a big thunderstorm last night.  I don't see any damage but I did wake up to the sound of chainsaws.  I know it rained hard for a long time.  John

I am glad you are going to the concert then! If it may rain. bring a rain poncho or umbrella. :) Life goes on, it is only water! But I am glad she was excited to go!

Yeah, I'm not worried about the rain but if it does, the band can't play.  It's outdoors.  I don't think it's going to anyway.

Cheri's computer started giving her fits so we got a new one for about $400.  Now it looks like the water heater is starting to leak.  It's a gas heater so I'm not going near that.

The furkids are all doing great.  Piggy is about out of hay and bedding and the place I get it is right across from the fairgrounds so that'll be a nuthouse for a couple of weeks.  Got to get hay soon though.  John

We have had a few more big rains the last few days, and lost power for like 8 hours the other night!
