Fair

The State Fair started the day before yesterday.  That means the highways on the west side of town are pretty well clogged, as well as the businesses and restaurants.  I'm only about 10 minutes away from the eastern gates but I'm on some rarely traveled back streets so it's hardly noticeable here...except the noise.

Maybe it's the weather but I can hear the concerts much clearer than usual.  Thursday night we were at a park about a mile farther away and we could hear the music just fine.  Last year Cheri and I saw ZZ Top there but this year there's nobody I really want to see, except possibly 3 Doors Down.  A few years ago we played right across the street from them and when they got done they came over to watch us.  Their drummer ended up sitting in with us for a couple songs.

I don't have to play the Fair this year and I'm perfectly happy with that.  It's too hard getting in and out through the crowds, it's too hot and too dusty, and you have to be there all...day...long.  The money is good but you have to wait a month to get it.  I do play tonight, but notat the Fair.

Last night there was a serious thunderstorm, but without the wind.  Just lots of thunder and lightning.  The State Fair always gets at least one good thunderstorm.  This year it may get several.  So many of the things there are under big tents, that can be a real problem.  Whenever we played there it was under a big, circus style tent, and I remember loading equipment in heavy rain a couple of times, not to mention the fact that you don't feel any too secure in a big tent during a severe thunderstorm.

Their webcam is live, although I don't think it's very good.  Last night there was another thunderstorm and about 9:00 I checked it.  Most of the vendors were closed.  The carnival was completely shut down and only a couple of people were wandering around.  That's rare for 9:00 at night.  There were no concerts scheduled last night, just tractor pulls, which they postponed until today.  Saturday night 3 Doors Down played the Fair again, but I had to play somewhere else that night.

This weekend I play Friday in Kansas City and Saturday about half way between.  Friday it's supposed to be 104 and Saturday 108.  Both are indoors but I'd still rather not do it.  Especially Kansas City.  But, got to keep that money rolling in.  John

I wonder what will happen to the cam link when the fair ends.

In the past, it stayed on until the day after the Fair, then just shuts down.  Usually stays on long enough to see all the vendors packing up and leaving.  The grounds of course, stay open all year and a lot still goes on there.  There are concerts in the big auditorium there, and that's where Cheri's grandson had his graduation.  The state police headquarters is there, and there's a playground where the grandkids like to play.  John
