Owl

A few nights ago I stepped outside and sat on my front porch.  It was very dark, but right across from the house is a street light that lights up the wall of trees and brush right behind it.  Everything beyond that is black.  Off to the left some distance away I heard an owl.  A minute or so later this enormous owl flew by, staying fairly close to the trees and past and somewhat below the street light.  It's surprising how big those things get.  Was kind of a spooky sight and if I'd been a small animal I'd have been terror stricken.  As it was, if he'd been a little bigger he could have carried me away!  John

I wonder what type of owl it was.

Too dark to see any detail, and I don't know much about owls, but they all look pretty much the same in this area.  I think, they're Great Horned Owls.  Big suckers.  I've seen them at night flying at the car and the wing span is just about the same as the windshield.  Never see them during the day.  We have heard owls around here, hooting back and forth to each other, no doubt trying to get a date.  John

Some owls can get pretty big.

In the summer I see bats flying around when I leave in the early morning.

There are bats around but it's kind of rare to see them.  There's a street light across the street and on rare occasion I may see a couple of bats flying around it catching bugs.  John

Yuip, when I see them it is a fast glimps as they swoop at bugs, but they waythe fly is obviously a bat.
