Something weird has been going on with Piggy.  He acts normally, behaves normally, but he's eating different.  He goes through bales of hay, bags of spinach, bunches of celery and bunches of carrots, but lately, he's not eating carrots.  This started when I opened a new bag of carrots.  He suddenly stopped eating them.  He'll pull out all his hay, eat every leaf of spinach and every stalk of celery, but leave an untouched piece of carrot behind.

I wondered if maybe there was a chemical on the carrots and if there was, washing them wasn't going to do it, so I started peeling them.  Didn't matter.  He wouldn't touch them.  Now I don't know if there's something wrong with the carrots or maybe he's just plain tired of them.  If he was behaving the least bit differently I'd be in a panic, but he's not.  He's as squeaky and active and apparently as hungry as ever, but he won't even nibble on the carrots, and he used to love the things.

So yesterday I started substituting the carrots with pineapple.  The pineapple disappears.  I wonder if I should try different carrots and throw the old ones out, because I know from experience he does get tired of pineapple after a while.  Scratching my head wondering.  John

Maybe try a different brand of carrot, or just not give Piggy any for a few weeks and then slowly introduce them back again. Thankfully, he is eating everything else, so maybe he's just getting tired of them.  Peggy

Did you get the carrots from a new store? Different brand? Perhaps try going to the supermarket and buying 1 organic carrot to test?

I don't know where Cheri got the carrots but we get different brands all the time.  I didn't give him carrots yesterday but gave him pineapple instead.  When I went to bed I noticed almost everything was gone but the pineapple.  That worried me but this morning the pineapple is gone.

I figured peeling the carrots would get rid of any weird smell or taste but it didn't help at all.  That's what makes me think he might just need a carrot break.  His favorite foods are hay and spinach, followed by celery, but he needs something with a little moisture in it.  It's just amazing how little water he drinks.  He gets it all from food and there's just no water in hay or spinach.  He gets a 6 or 8 ounce water bottle and I doubt if he goes through a tenth of an ounce in a month.  That's so little a camel would be embarrassed.  Still no behavioral differences so I'm not in a panic...yet.  But I am wondering what's going on.  John

I thought Spinach had a lot of water in it, no?

Spinach not as dry as the hay but it's not as wet as the celery.

OK, I'm stunned.  Cheri said the last carrots came from Aldi's.  This morning she got carrots from Wal-mart and gave a couple pieces to Piggy, and he ate them right up.  That's good, as I don't think he cares so much for pineapple.  He leaves that till long after he's finished everything else.

The Aldi's carrots don't look, feel or smell any different that I can tell but now I'm wondering, should I try peeling another Aldi's carrot to see whether he'll eat it, or just pitch them altogether?  It's almost his breakfast time.  He gets hay around the clock, with spinach celery and carrots twice a day.  Sometimes he gets pineapple or strawberries but the strawberries haven't been very good quality lately.  Any ideas on whether to try the old carrots again or not?  John
