Did you all see the news and video of the "small hydrothermal explosion" in Biscuit Basin yesterday?

If not: News with video

Hi Tim, Yes, I can agree on how much politics ars in the news. Still I like to sit in front of the news while I have dinner, so I get about 20 minutes a day. The Yellowstone one was not off the news, I heard it on my local religious radio station (yeah, I listed to that or jazz while I work) and I quickly looked it up on the net. Funny, the only news I saw it on was the local channel, not on national.

The fire near town is now 95% contained and about 18,000 acres last I heard. And it rained a bit last night, so that must be a nice help for the fire fighters. But our air quality is pretty bad here from that fire, other fires in Montana and in Canada. So we have a wonderful haz all the time and bright orange sun rises ans sun sets.

I had heard about it but I hadn't seen it till now.  If I'd been there, I think I'd still be running.  I can't watch the news either but I'm around people a lot so I can't help getting beat over the head with it regularly.

I did see Old Faithful go off when I was out there.  In a nearby visitors center they had an exhibit of things they'd dipped into it.  Everything in the exhibit had essentially turned to stone, including what looked like a stone sock.  I don't think it struck me at the time, just how hot that water must have been, or how dangerous it really was.  John

A lot of people have died in Yellowstone since it opened, related to hot pools, springs the like. People do dumb things, but what happened the other day was not a person's fault at all. I have been there and seen idiots go into hot pools to "soak" their feet or relax. Stupid. People boil to death almost instantly if you pick the wrong pool. Worse is in winter people run all around on the slow in the areas with the hot water and they have no idea the snow can cover one and the heat freezes the snow into a thin ice laywe over the pool, and it will just break if you cross it.

I'd never have thought about snow covering one.  We really didn't explore Yellowstone like we could have or should have.  We saw a lot of bears, which to one of the "boys from Illinois" was a jaw-dropping novelty.  We had planned on camping there but at the time there had been an unusual number of bear attacks, and having seen so many bears, we decided against it.  We stayed in a motel.  Not very adventurous, I know.  John
