Storms

Big line of storms rolled through tonight about 8:00.  They waited till after the kids got home from school.  Tornadoes and wind damage all around us, mostly to the south, but mostly what we got was heavy rain and some close lightning.  (Big, house shaking booms)  Some flooding around but we didn't have to go anywhere.  Houses damaged about 20 miles south of us.  Nothing really for us though.  An animal shelter a couple hours south of us went under water, but they did get the animals out.  It looks like everything is past us now.  John

I hope the storms are gone and you do not get more.

Storms are long gone.  We got a good, heavy rain and close lightning, but the lights never even flickered and I don't think the wind blew hard enough to blow out a match.  One big boom woke up Cheri and shook the house but that was it.  Storms rolled in about 8:00 but the tornado sirens went off about 9:00.  I checked the radar but didn't see anything.  I think the kids might have been more nervous, (they worry about tornadoes) but when they saw it wasn't bothering me, they figured it must be OK.  There's no place close to shelter and there's no basement.  We've got tons of blankets though, (Cheri has a blanket thing) so the best we can do is bundle up and get in the middle of the house.  Fortunately, no wind at all.  John

Thought a bathtub was the place to go, no?

I saw some experiments done with bathtubs, most of which are made of cast iron or steel.  They can protect you from some flying debris but if it gets picked up, you're pretty well doomed.  So, everybody bundles up in blankets and stay under a doorway in the middle of the house, while Cheri has me stand in front of a window under a chandelier to keep an eye out.  (I'm kidding, of course.)

Sedalia is something of a tornado magnet.  It's been hit 3 times since I moved down here and Dad said there was a bad one just before I came down.  This house came close during the last one.  Not quite 2 blocks away it tore the roof off a church then jumped up and came down a few blocks north ripping up some big trees but pretty much leaving the houses along the street alone.  I was away at work when it hit but at this house, it blew away our old garbage can, and blew a nicer, newer one in the yard.  There were canceled checks all over the yard.  (Not ours.)  It blew a couple of shutters off the house and broke the front storm door open.  Cheri called me in a panic so I left work to drive home, and ran right into the storm.  Not the tornado, just the storm around it.  By the time I got here it was nice and sunny.  John

I am glad I am not in a tornado location, though a big earthquake can hit here since I am in an active place.

I don't like to think of the animals outside in a tornado. :/
