School

The kids started school this morning, and the whole day started and ended in kind of a mess.

One rides the bus and the other had to be dropped off by us.  The first thing to happen was the bus breezed right on by without stopping.  So, both would have to be dropped off by us.  At both schools, the traffic was nuts.

When school got out, the bus breezed right on by again without letting her off.  She texted that the bus didn't stop but that the driver would bring her back.  Picking up the other was a lot worse than last year.  The number of students doubled to 800 and of course, that meant more crazy traffic.  So Cheri parked a good distance from the school and had me walk up to get him and guide him back to the car.  It still took a half hour, mostly standing there while they let all 800 kids out, 2 at a time.  "Walkers" get to leave about any time, so I told him, next time walk out toward where we parked today.  I'd still go out to meet him, but wouldn't be standing there in whatever weather waiting for nothing.

I'll be glad when we get this worked out more efficiently, and I can figure out when I'll get to sleep, which I'm still having a lot of trouble with anyway.  John

Bet it just takes a week to get it figured fully out.

I hope so.  There was a lot more security than last year.  They were all over the place.  I didn't know what they'd think of a scraggly old man walking up to the school, but there were a lot of people around and I had a grandson to vouch for me.  John

Think high security for the opening or perhaps the forst week or so?

I wondered about that.  All last year there was just one armed security guard.  This year there was a bunch, some armed, some not.  Doubling the number of students, created a much bigger security challenge.  Double the number of buses, double the number of cars, double the number of confused parents, (including me) and 6 or 8 times the number of security people.  Most of us stood around in full view of our kids, but the kids weren't allowed to just come to us from the other side of a fence.  I tend to think it will all become more efficient over time.  Hopefully not over too much time.  Standing out there for a half hour is frustrating enough during good weather.  They were calling out student names or numbers over a PA system.  You can't do that when it rains.  When it starts raining or freezing, sleeting or snowing, we've got to figure out a more efficient process.  John

Why did the number of students there double? Thats some wild population growth. Is the area growing fast?
