I just heard that Robert Redford died at 89! One of the crappy things being older, the people you grew up with start to drop! I remember my father pointing out people on TV and movies telling me they were dead, and being a young snot, it went in one ear and out the other. NOW I live through it too.

Ain't that the truth?  I used to watch so many old movies, WC Fields, Marx Brothers, Bogart, (I still do) and I knew most of them were dead before I was born.  I first remember Robert Redford doing a "Twilight Zone" episode.  Now I'm seeing all the musicians I grew up with dropping off.  Most of them maybe 10 years older than me.  Half the Doors are gone, 3 quarters of the Monkees, Ozzy Osborn, Rick O'Kasick from the Cars, the lead singer from Supertramp...Hard to wrap my head around it.

Paul was talking to me the other day saying he'd calculated that he hoped we could work together another 10 years.  I might still be around in 10 years but it's hard to imagine myself standing there playing Van Halen or Joe Satriani at 78.  I've been pretty lucky so far.  I do have some tinnitus, but my hearing is still fine.  No arthritis or anything like that and I can still play as fast as anybody I know.  Still, 10 more years?  John

I think I remember that twilight zone, wasn't he playing a dead cop?

And why can't you play into your 80's. Look at all the other bands doing that. ;)

Yes, Redford played "Death", disguised as a cop.  Was a powerful episode.

LOL I suppose I could play into my 80s.  Of course, those guys play an hour and a half, and I've got to do 4 hours.  Honestly, I've considered going single, playing primarily "Leo Kottke" style 12 string stuff.  I'd still have to lug around a PA system, though nowhere near as large as the one we have now.  A couple of acoustic 12 strings and a stool to sit on.  Got to be a lot easier.  John

I used to go to Jazz brunches in the late 80's and early 90's on weekends. Do those still exist? I bet you could do a Jazz brunch gigs playing on a 12 sting on that stool. ;) ANd it owuld be indoors and perhaps free food.

I'd never heard of a jazz brunch.  There's still something of a jazz scene in Kansas City but I'm not at all familiar with it.  If I did go solo, one of the things I'd dislike most about it would be booking myself.  I tried booking bands years ago and hard as I tried, I couldn't sell hacksaws in a jail.  I ended up going through a booking agent.  Paul does all the band's booking.  He gets me more money than anybody else around here gets and keeps me busier than I want to be.  If I tried to book myself, I could probably work at a lot of the same places we do, but I have no idea how much I'd be worth.  Probably more than I get now, but I don't know.  I don't really know how that style would go over in this area either.  I may have to find out!  John
