Deer

Wow, I had a rare treat tonight!  About midnight I started to take the garbage out to the street, turned on the outside light and before I took a step, I was practically face to face with a huge, beautiful deer, maybe 25 or 30 feet away.  Not wanting to scare her, I stood very still as she looked at me.  Apparently, she wasn't very scared.  She just looked down and started munching on the grass.  As it was raining, I slowly stepped back inside and went to tell Cheri.

Finally, I figured I'd better brave the rain and get the garbage to the street.  So I slowly and carefully looked back outside, and there were 3 deer, just casually eating the grass.  Not standing out in the rain this time, I stood and watched them for maybe 5 minutes, when they slowly walked away.

I rolled the garbage out to the street and on my way back in the house, there was Taylor.  Of course, I had to feed her, so I fed her where she wouldn't get wet eating.  I'll probably always remember those 3 deer staring at me, then ignoring me while they ate.  So beautiful on a rainy night.  John

I remember when we used to put oats out for the deer, they would hang around all the time and they became too brave. THey would be waiting for us to come home and feed them and when one in particular becan to walk up to us (within feet) we stopped feeding them. It scared us that they would trust people too much and that would be bad. But I did like watching them through the windows.

I remember the day I saw ^Copycat^ and a deer and ^Copycat^ jumped at the deer and the deer went right for him! He chased ^Copycat^ around the firepit a few times and ^Copycat^ had to run for his life. The deer can be rather nasty if so inclined.

I've heard of people badly injured in trying to untangle deer from fences, which seems to happen occasionally around here.  They apparently have a formidable kick.  It made me curious as to how many people were killed each year by deer and I found a couple of numbers but the most common was 440.  Most of those were caused by deer/vehicle collisions, but I couldn't find a number that didn't include car accidents.

I thought about the danger of deer not being afraid of people, and I had to wonder if they have any idea which people they can trust and which they shouldn't, and particularly where they can trust you.  I really didn't want to scare the ones in the yard.  While I'm on the edge of town, I've seen them farther into our residential neighborhood.

That being said, I wonder about Taylor.  She's known me for well over a year now, but still won't let me get more than a couple of feet away.  In all this time, I've touched her once, and she jumped away like I was a lightning bolt.  I seriously doubt that she trusts any other human more than me.  I know she doesn't trust anyone else who comes out of the house, especially if they have the dog in tow.  John

Another big, beautiful deer tonight.  I went out about 12:30 AM to roll the garbage out to the street.  I was rumbling along making all kinds of racket when just the other side of my car, I saw the deer.  Too late I'd already bothered her and she walked off into the dark.  John

I suppose you get white-tail deer there?

That's about it here.  With the warmer weather, this area has been thick with gray squirrels.  I also seem to have a mole in the yard.  This doesn't seem to be a particularly industrious mole, not moving around a lot, but I've got one.  John
