Cats are notorious for not liking change.  (There's a lot of that in me, too.)  Still, sometimes it's unavoidable.

My "man cave" is primarily the kid's playroom during the day and Karly's bedroom at night.  Karly understandably, did not really want Van Gogh's litter box in her bedroom, which was fine when it was just my "man cave", but not fine in her bedroom.  So, I had to determine a suitable place to move it.  Suitable not only to everybody but to Van Gogh as well.

Van Gogh usually sleeps with me and between our bed and the litter box, is the kitchen, which isn't too far from Karly's bedroom.  So I found a place in the kitchen.  It's actually a little more convenient for Van Gogh, but the question was, would she find it acceptable?  Apparently so.  In fact she has more privacy in the kitchen than she ever did in the playroom, and I think just maybe, she likes it better.

She took to it right away.  No hesitation, no loud complaining, just...OK, it's over here now.  I did have to find a different location for her food.  The dust from that litter is essentially glue and I didn't want it settling on her food.  It's been a couple days now and thankfully, no problem whatsoever.  John

Do you use a covered/hooded box or open?

It's wide open and somewhat larger than standard litter boxes and probably not as deep as most, to make it easier to get in and out of.  I use Scoop Away clumping litter.  It doesn't crumble like some of the others and keeps the box good and clean.  It is dusty though, and you have to stay on top of the dust that settles on anything around it.  John

Yup, I know the dust part. I used scoop-away for a long time and a covered box at the old house, but I removed the door so it was more a hooded box. I finally placed an air filter next to it so it sucked in a lot of the dust and I would change the filter as needed.

When I had 7 cats living in the house, (16 years ago) you're supposed to have one litter box per cat, and there just wasn't room for that, so I had one enormous box that must have made them feel like they were using a beach.  None of them seemed to have any problem with it.  With just Van Gogh, her litter box is still larger than usual and I'm reluctant to cover it.  I just keep a big supply of dust rags around.  John

We had 3 in the old house (remember we had 7 also at one time). THat worked fine. Not sure if one would have worked though, because Electra and Calliope did not get on with Itchy and Orion.
