My birthday was about a week back, and I never mentioned it because I never liked making any kind of a fuss about it. I never even listed it on Facebook so I wouldn't get a bunch of people commenting on it. But the band knows it, and they weren't at all shy about posting it. In fact, the gig we had last week, (even though it wasn't on my actual birthday) was a special hire just to celebrate it. That morning there were 60 posts about it on the band's page, so I started putting hearts on all the posts. By the time I'd put up about 20 hearts, it had grown to 190. It was really getting away from me so, I put up a blanket post thanking everybody.
That night, of course a lot of people wished me a happy birthday, and I was greeted with a dozen helium balloons and 60 cupcakes. On the first break they presented me with a personalized silver flask with 2 personalized silver shot glasses, and a bottle of Scotch, although I very rarely drink. There was also a bar shot glass, and a long sleeved T-shirt, although I never wear T-shirts. I was spared the horror of everyone singing "Happy Birthday", but the owner made a short speech.
At the end of the night I was told I had to take the balloons and however many cupcakes were left, (there were 9 left). If anyone had seen me stuffing all those balloons in the car, it would have looked hilarious. The car was stuffed. At home I had to get them back out of the car and into the house, then through the house. It was a lot harder than it sounds.
Of course, a lot of people asked how old I was, and estimates ranged from 12, (12? Really?) to a very polite 50. (I'm 69.) I just thought it was funnier to answer that I was so old, every time Paul turned on the stage light, I felt like walking into it. John
