Phone Danger

Last night about midnight, Karly came walking in holding a phone charger wire.  She told me her phone woke her up "dinging", and said it was about to shut off in 30 seconds.  She saw smoke coming from the wire.  She handed me the wire and indeed, the end was so hot I couldn't hold it, and it had to have been a minute since she unplugged it.  It had to have been very close to a fire.

I used to plug the phones in overnight to charge but I learned a long time ago that when you leave it plugged in, it stops charging when full, then after a few minutes drops down to 99% and starts charging again, and does this all night long, which eventually ruins the battery.  For that reason, I plug the phones in during the day and keep checking until they're 100%, then unplug them.  I never let our phones go dead.

Not knowing whether Karly's phone was causing the problem or the charger, I told her to wait till this evening to try chargint it again.  Apparently it was the charger wire.  I told her not to let it charge overnight anymore.  Disaster averted.  Barely.  John

That is scary. I use wireless charging and my phone stays on the pad all day while I am working (though I take it off for lunch or to see texts or if it rings). Not sure how that works. I have had the wireless pads since I had my old windows phone, bought them in 2013 or so. They never feel hot, and they are plugged in all the time.

I used to have a Windows phone and liked it a lot, except that it didn't have enough memory to hold a chess app.  To be honest, I almost never have my phone turned on.  Whenever Cheri goes somewhere or whenever I'm gone to work I have it on in case there's a problem.  In a week's time, my phone may get down to 90%, then I'll charge it.  Cheri on the other hand, uses her phone constantly and will get down to about 60% every day.  I'm almost exclusively a computer guy.  I do most of my studying through it, watch documentaries on it, get my news through it, and 99% of my communicating through it.  I do play chess on my phone when I'm stuck somewhere else, but I'm not crazy about playing chess on a 3 inch screen.  John

I prefet my notebook myself and use my phone for email checks and such. I don't like surfing on it, way too small a screen. My setup with my notebook has 3 monitors, I like that.
